Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone - So Worth It
Yesterday, I had so much fun playing a character in a show called “Mother I Want to Join the Revue.”
Meet Riet Hoogendoorn: she’s a former theater star who’s super dramatic, always ready to make sarcastic comments, and loves her cognac. She's funny because the more I act obnoxious, the more the audience loves it and laughs along.
But here’s the secret I’ve learned from acting:
Every time I step into a new role, I’m pushing myself out of my comfort zone. At first, I feel safe doing things I know, but then I challenge myself to do something just outside that safe zone, something that character would do and I would not. Like walking like a drunk. Just one foot outside the 'zone'. It feels awkward at first, but soon enough, I get used to it. And then—boom! My comfort zone has expanded!
It’s like this with everything in life:
The more energy you give, the more you get back. Acting is the same. You can only act out what’s already inside you. For example, Riet is the sassy, bold side of me that I don’t always show. But it’s so freeing to just pretend and be silly, even if it feels a bit uncomfortable at first. The more I do it, the easier it gets.
At first, I felt a little embarrassed, worried about how people would see me. But when I let go of that fear, it was a blast. Acting in that role even helped me learn to stand up for myself in real life.
Take that first awkward step, let yourself be a little silly, and watch how you grow! It’s worth it, I promise. And remember, sometimes it’s the most fun when you act like you’re 16 again—even if you’re way past 16! (I'm 56!)
